Kid craft – painting pebbles – WFMW

It has been quite a long time since I took part in WFMW (Works For Me Wednesday), but here I am!
It is so easy, that it can hardly even be called a “craft” but my son and I spent an enjoyable afternoon, and when his big sisters came home, they could not wait to join in.
I needed to distract/occupy my 4 year old while his dad and sisters took a boat trip to nearby Rathlin Island to watch the seals and puffins.
Easy steps!
1. Take son to beach, and spend a considerable time selecting your pebbles/rocks. Fortunately our holiday cottage is near a number of beaches in Northern Ireland, including some near limestone cliffs, so we chose some white ones – the perfect “blank canvas”!……….. Forget to take photo 🙂
2. Paddle on the beach while you are there, and maybe have an icecream too!
3. Return and paint the pebbles with childs painting set. I was impressed at how strong the depth of colour could be as long as you don’t use too much water.
4. Watch you child get totally engrossed!
5. Make sure you have plenty of stones, as my son insisted on copying every pattern that I did….in fact at one point he said “Mummy, YOU can paint my stones for me!” (maybe I was enjoying it bit too much!!!)
6. Would work well with shells and other items too. I imagine that covering them with clear varnish would preserve your masterpieces – but we didn’t bother!
So – what works for you….any ideas? Why not share them over at We Are That Family.
Painting pebbles is always fun! Especially when you collect them all in a jar. Then you have a new centrepiece and something for posterity!
We love painting pebbles, but haven’t done it in a while. We’ll have o get ourselves off out to the beach and pick up some more.
This was a great post. I remember doing this when I was a kid, but had forgotten all about it. I will do this with my kids this summer!
Thanks for sharing!
Just stopping by from SITS wishing you a very Happy Wednesday!
P.S. I’m giving away a subscription to House Beautiful on my blog http://www.sweeterliving.blogspot.com
Such a simple idea! My youngest would love this and we live right near the lake so rocks would be so easy to find. I might do this next week!
Thanks for the tip, Jan! I need these recommendations to get out of my craft rut. 🙂
We have tons of rocks and pebbles we have saved from various places. That would be super cute to do! Great idea!
Those rocks turned out beautifully! What a creative idea – I need to try that w/ my girls!
Oh! I love that craft. What a great Idea. We are going to try that. Thanks.
Helloooooo My Friend,
Finally came for a little peek at your blog! I’ve truly missed my visits with you.
Ah, the rock painting… I have dabbled at this as well. I’m surely not near as good as your son… ha! Let me know if you would like me to put your George on a rock sometime, I do good animals. *smile*
Well, my Mr. is inviting me to a swim in the lake, who am I to refuse?
I will return soon!

I love this idea! I’m trying to think of fun/creative ideas for my daughter’s birthday party in a few weeks and this could be VERY fun. Now, how do I fit it into a fairy themed party?!
I love this Jan…what an EXCELLENT idea!!! You always find a way to inspire me!
God bless-
Amanda

i am always looking for ways to spend time and do something creative with my kids. thank you for this great idea
You should teach your son how to skip rocks in the water. He would love that.
