On 29th December ……….appreciation

You might imagine this is a post appreciating Christmas, the lovely gifts and yummy food. Happy times spent with family and friends.

However tonight my appreciation is for something more basic yet essential……water.

The cottage was without running water for just about 36 hours but simple things like brushing your teeth or boiling the kettle that make you think! How much we take it for granted.  My thoughts have obviously turned today to those who don’t have access to clean running water. We were able to get by with a few litres of bottled water, but for many around the world a long daily trek to a water source would be required.

The saying “you don’t miss it til it’s gone” could not have been truer.

Following the “big freeze” and now the “big thaw” the mains water in Northern Ireland is estimated that currently 40,000 homes ate without water.

Throughout Northern Ireland tonight those who have received mains water again will be, like us, enjoying the sound of flushing toilets and running a hot showers.

What do YOU take for granted?

  1. I think we all take things like that for granted. Lately, I have been thankful for my warm bed. We have had a really cold winter so far, and I have spent many nights thinking about those that do not have warm houses and beds. Electricity is something else that I try to not take for granted. 2. Hi JM,

I totally KNOW what you are talking about. We live in a rural area and in the summer we switch over to “irrigation” water – looks and smells like wet fish! We have to bring in all our drinking water so we too appreciate and value our water.

We like to conserve, just to do our part. I think once one has had the experience of having to ration it out we become aware of how much we waste.

I’ll be praying for everyone there – its awful if one is not prepared. We also keep emergency water around at all times!

    Love, Barb
